We are looking for a
Full Time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for our Kootenai County Facility in Coeur d'Alene, ID
to work in close and immediate contact with inmates on a daily basis providing general and emergency nursing care in the medical unit of the correctional facility while maintaining facility security standards. When necessary, the LPN makes referrals on behalf of inmates to the staff physician, nurse practitioner, dentist, mental health professional, or specialist in alcohol and drug abuse treatment (as applicable). The LPN ensures all medication is administered in accordance with standard operating procedures and as ordered by the authorizing authority.
Essential Functions of role:

  • Integrates and implements referrals of inmates to the staff physician, nurse practitioner, dentist, and/or mental health professional.
  • Documents the patient s plan of care using identified nursing diagnoses, expected patient outcomes, and selected nursing interventions.
  • Administers prescribed treatment and medication to inmate patients as needed and medically required as directed by physician / physician extender.
  • Administer medications according to medication administration record (MAR).
  • Documents all prescription drug use for inmate patients according to established drug recordkeeping practices.
  • Documents medical history and treatment of inmate patients, using standard medical record procedures.
  • Relay information to the next nurse or staff member on shift; or to the supervisor in charge.
  • Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Monitors the safety and effectiveness of the environment and equipment.
  • Performs focused interview to identify specific patient needs; assesses and identifies health problems of new inmates and develops medical record.
  • Look for signs and symptoms indicating physiologic and psychosocial changes in the patient s condition and report to the RN on staff, supervisor in charge, or the medical provider.
  • Collaborates with RN, and medical provider regarding the plan of care according to evaluation, changes in medical plan of care, and effective/ineffective nursing interventions.
  • Performs interventions according to identified priorities, plan of care, and the facility policies and patient care outcome standard.
  • Uses clinical judgment in evaluation and responding to emergency medical situations involving inmates or staff.
  • Passes medications and gives treatments according to a medical provider orders and in accordance with facility policy.
  • Assist with ordering medications.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and organized medication cart and medication room.
  • Assist with monthly preparation of Medication Administration Record (MAR)
  • Perform medication verifications in accordance with CHP policy and procedure.
  • Maintains sharps counts, tool control, etc.
  • Supports professional practice by observing the following: Uses knowledge and practices in accordance with 1) the Nurse Practice Act; 2) Standards of Nursing Practice; 3) The National Commission on Correctional Health Care Standards; and 4) healthcare policies and protocols.
  • Maintains confidentiality and security of health records and protected health information (PHI) in compliance with HIPAA requirements.

Experience Required

  • Graduate of an accredited LPN nursing Program.
  • One year of full-time experience providing hands-on healthcare.
  • One year prior professional nursing experience, preferred.
  • Prior correctional clinical experience preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver s license and reliable transportation.
  • Diplomacy in dealing with patients, officers and the public.
  • Current Licensed Practical Nurse license for the state in which the nurse practices.
  • Full command of the English language, both verbal and written.
  • Current PPD or chest x-ray.
  • Current CPR certification with the ability to perform CPR as needed.
